Why Closed-Cell Foam for Metal Buildings
Metal is an excellent conductor of heat. Without insulation, a steel building in Katy's summer climate becomes an oven — roof decks can reach 160°F and radiate heat into the interior 24 hours a day. How thick should closed-cell foam be on metal building walls and roof?
We typically start at 2 inches on walls and roof panels — this provides R-13 and meets the vapor retarder requirement for Climate Zone 2A. For better thermal performance or if the building is air-conditioned, 3 inches (R-19+) is often recommended for the roof. We'll calculate the right thickness based on your use case and budget.
Will spray foam prevent condensation ('sweating') in my metal building?
Yes. Condensation forms when humid exterior air contacts a cool metal surface. Closed-cell foam eliminates both the thermal bridge (keeping the interior metal surface warmer) and the air pathway (preventing exterior humid air from reaching the metal). After foam, condensation stops entirely in properly sealed applications.
Can I spray foam an existing metal building with old fiberglass batts?
Yes. We remove old fiberglass insulation, clean the panels, and apply closed-cell foam directly to the metal. Old fiberglass in metal buildings almost always has moisture damage, sagging, or rodent contamination — removal and foam replacement is a significant upgrade.
Do you also insulate the slab or concrete floor?
We can spray closed-cell foam under the slab before pouring (new construction) or install foam board under a new concrete topping slab (retrofit). We can also foam the interior perimeter between the slab and wall panels where air infiltration is common.
