Signs Your Houston Home Needs New or Better Insulation

Most homeowners don't think about their insulation until something goes wrong — an energy bill that spikes, a room that's never comfortable, or a moisture problem that keeps recurring. Here are the signs that tell us your home's insulation is failing or inadequate.

Your Energy Bills Are Higher Than Your Neighbors'

If your home is roughly the same size and vintage as nearby homes but your monthly electricity bill is consistently higher, inadequate insulation is one of the most common explanations. An uninsulated or under-insulated attic in Houston requires your AC system to work 30–50% harder to maintain set-point temperatures during the long cooling season. Energy bills that have been steadily increasing even without lifestyle changes are often a sign of settling or degraded insulation that was marginal to begin with.

Some Rooms Are Always Uncomfortably Hot or Cold

Rooms that can't be kept comfortable regardless of thermostat setting — particularly rooms near exterior walls, rooms on the top floor, or rooms above unconditioned spaces like garages — are a common symptom of inadequate insulation in the relevant building assemblies. If one bedroom is always 5°F hotter than the rest of the house in summer, the likely culprit is an uninsulated or under-insulated roof assembly above it. Spray foam at the roof deck almost always solves this problem.

You Feel Drafts Inside the House

Interior drafts — feeling air movement near outlets on exterior walls, near baseboards, or around windows and doors — indicate air infiltration through the building envelope. Properly insulated and sealed walls do not have drafts. If you can feel air coming through an outlet cover on a hot summer day, the wall cavity behind it is not air-sealed. This is one of the most immediate signs that your home needs spray foam air sealing.

Your Home Is Unusually Humid Despite Running AC

In Houston's climate, your air conditioner handles both temperature and humidity. A properly sealed and insulated home reaches set-point humidity (typically 50–55% RH) with normal AC operation. If your home feels sticky and humid even when the AC is running, uncontrolled air infiltration is introducing outdoor humidity faster than your AC can remove it. Spray foam's air-sealing function dramatically reduces this infiltration load, allowing your AC to manage humidity at normal capacity.

You See or Smell Mold

Mold inside wall cavities or in the attic almost always has moisture at its root — and inadequate insulation creates the conditions for moisture accumulation. When warm, humid air contacts a cooler surface inside a wall or attic assembly, it condenses. Fiberglass insulation absorbs this moisture and holds it against framing and sheathing for extended periods. If you've had mold remediation and the mold recurred, the insulation assembly is likely the underlying cause that wasn't addressed.

You Have Pests Entering Through the Floor or Walls

Rodents, insects, and spiders use the same gaps in the building envelope that allow air and moisture infiltration. If you have regular pest intrusion despite exterior pest control, the entry points are likely in the floor system, wall penetrations, or attic. Spray foam closes these entry paths permanently — and unlike fiberglass, it provides nothing for rodents to nest in or chew through.

Your Home Is Over 15 Years Old and Has Original Insulation

Fiberglass batt insulation degrades, settles, and loses performance over time. Most Houston homes built before 2010 were built to energy codes that are now significantly out of date. The 2021 IECC requires R-38 in attics for Climate Zone 2A — most pre-2000 Houston homes have R-11 or R-19. If your home has original insulation and you've never upgraded, there's almost certainly a significant performance gap between what you have and what current code requires.

Your HVAC System Runs Constantly or Was Recently Upsized

An HVAC system that runs for extended periods without reaching set-point is fighting a thermal load it wasn't sized for — usually because the building envelope is allowing excessive heat gain. If your AC contractor has recommended upsizing your system without recommending insulation improvements first, get a second opinion. Upsizing HVAC without fixing the building envelope is addressing the symptom rather than the cause — and results in higher equipment costs and continued high energy bills.
