WHAT IS CORROSION UNDER INSULATION AND WHY DOES SPRAY FOAM PREVENT IT?
Corrosion under insulation (CUI) occurs when moisture enters the gap between a conventional insulation system and the metal substrate it covers. The moisture cannot drain or dry out, cycles between wet and dry as equipment heats and cools, concentrates corrosive ions from the environment, and accelerates corrosion at rates far exceeding what uninsulated metal would experience in open air. Closed cell spray foam prevents CUI by eliminating the annular gap entirely — the foam bonds directly to the metal surface, leaving no pathway for moisture to enter and no gap for it to accumulate. NACE/AMPP literature documents closed cell spray foam as an effective CUI mitigation approach for ambient-temperature and moderate-temperature industrial applications.
WHAT TEMPERATURE RANGES IS INDUSTRIAL SPRAY FOAM RATED FOR?
Standard 2.0 lb density closed cell spray polyurethane foam is rated for continuous service temperatures from approximately -60°F to +200°F (-51°C to +93°C), with some formulations rated to higher temperatures. For applications above 200°F surface temperature, spray foam is not the correct product — high-temperature mineral wool or calcium silicate systems are specified for those applications. For ambient-temperature, low-temperature, and moderate-temperature applications — which represent the majority of above-grade piping, vessel, tank, and building insulation in Gulf Coast oil and gas facilities — industrial closed cell spray foam performs well within its rated temperature range. Phantom Foam confirms service temperature requirements before specifying foam for any industrial piping or process equipment application.
CAN SPRAY FOAM BE APPLIED IN CLASSIFIED AREAS?
Spray polyurethane foam application involves flammable chemical components and requires rigorous ignition source control. Application in or adjacent to classified areas requires hot work permit compliance, area gas testing, equipment bonding and grounding, and coordination with facility safety personnel. Phantom Foam understands and works within facility hot work permit systems. We do not unilaterally apply foam in classified areas — we coordinate with facility safety management, confirm the area is clear and safe for hot work, and maintain all required ignition source controls throughout the application. Documentation of hot work permit compliance is part of our standard industrial project close-out package.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AROMATIC AND ALIPHATIC POLYUREA?
Both are spray-applied elastomeric polyurea coatings, but they have different UV stability and different best-use applications. Aromatic polyurea is the standard product for secondary containment liners, berm coatings, trench liners, and below-grade waterproofing applications where UV exposure is not a concern. It is lower cost than aliphatic and has excellent chemical resistance and elongation properties. Aliphatic polyurea maintains color and gloss stability under UV exposure — it does not amber or chalk when exposed to direct sunlight. It is specified as a topcoat on spray foam roofing systems, as a finish coat on tank shells and exterior surfaces where appearance and long-term UV stability are required, and for above-grade applications where the coating will be visible and needs to maintain its appearance over time.
DO YOU PROVIDE DOCUMENTATION FOR INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL PROJECTS?
Yes — documentation is a standard deliverable on all industrial and commercial Phantom Foam projects. Close-out packages include product data sheets, SDS documents, application records with ambient conditions, thickness measurements, and project photographs. For TCEQ-regulated secondary containment applications, we provide documentation of coating thickness and coverage suitable for compliance reporting. For GCs, facility managers, and insurance-required documentation, our close-out packages are formatted for use in facility maintenance records and regulatory files. Documentation is delivered before the project is considered complete — it is not an optional add-on.
