Spray Foam Insulation Myths Debunked

Spray foam insulation comes with a set of persistent misconceptions — about cost, safety, and performance — that lead many Houston homeowners to stick with underperforming fiberglass long after they'd benefit from upgrading. Here's what's actually true.

Myth: Spray foam is toxic and unsafe for my family

The truth:

Once cured — typically within 24 hours of application — spray foam is chemically inert and does not off-gas. Our foam systems contain no CFCs, HCFCs, formaldehyde, asbestos, or ozone-depleting chemicals. During application, the space must be evacuated and proper ventilation maintained — because the uncured chemicals are isocyanate-based and require proper respiratory protection for applicators. After curing, spray foam is non-toxic and actually improves indoor air quality by reducing the infiltration of dust, pollen, mold spores, and allergens. Many of our customers with asthma and allergies report significant improvement in air quality after spray foam installation.

Myth: Spray foam is way too expensive to ever be worth it

The truth:

Spray foam costs more per square foot installed than fiberglass or cellulose — typically 3–5× upfront. But the comparison needs to include lifetime cost. Spray foam does not settle, sag, degrade, or need replacement. Fiberglass may need to be replaced or supplemented within 10–15 years. More importantly, the energy savings from spray foam are significant and immediate. Houston homeowners typically see their monthly energy bills drop $100–$200 after attic spray foam installation. At those savings, the full installation cost is recovered within 3–5 years — and savings continue compounding for the 20+ year lifespan of the foam. Including the install cost in your mortgage and saving $200/month on electricity means you're cash-flow positive from day one.

Myth: Spray foam makes your house too airtight — it can't breathe

The truth:

Houses don't need to 'breathe' through uncontrolled air infiltration. What occupants need is fresh air — which should be delivered through controlled mechanical ventilation, not random cracks and gaps in the building envelope. A properly spray-foamed home will need an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or heat recovery ventilator (HRV) to supply fresh air, just as new construction in most code jurisdictions requires. The trade-off is a fully controlled indoor environment: fresh air comes in where and how you want it, and conditioned air doesn't escape through gaps and cracks.

Myth: Spray foam will make my house smell bad

The truth:

Properly installed and cured spray foam has no persistent odor. There is a temporary chemical smell during and immediately after application — and occupants should stay out for at least 24 hours after spraying to allow curing and ventilation. Some customers report a faint chemical smell for 2–3 days after moving back in; this dissipates completely as the foam cures. If spray foam has an ongoing bad smell in your home, it was either improperly mixed, applied too thickly in a single pass (causing incomplete cure), or there is a separate moisture or mold issue in the building that the foam installation didn't address.

Myth: You can't spray foam over existing insulation

The truth:

In many cases you can — and we regularly do. Spray foam can be applied over existing fiberglass batts in some configurations, and can be applied on top of blown-in cellulose in others. The right approach depends on the application, the condition of the existing insulation, and the moisture management strategy for the assembly. We assess each situation individually. Sometimes the existing insulation is removed first; sometimes we work with it in place.

Myth: All spray foam is the same

The truth:

Open-cell and closed-cell foam are very different products with different applications, performance profiles, and costs. Open-cell has lower density, higher expansion, better sound absorption, and lower cost. Closed-cell has higher R-value per inch, acts as a vapor retarder, adds structural strength, and is the right choice for exterior, below-grade, and high-moisture applications. Using the wrong foam type in a given application produces suboptimal results. A knowledgeable contractor recommends the right product for each specific part of the building envelope — which is why we assess every project individually before making a recommendation.
