Why Spray Foam Is the Right Choice for Container Insulation
Most alternative insulation approaches — rigid foam board pinned to walls, fiberglass batt liner kits, or reflective bubble wrap — fail in one or more critical ways inside shipping containers. They don't bond to the corrugated steel, they leave gaps at the corrugations where condensation forms, and they do nothing to address the thermal mass of the steel shell itself.
Closed-cell spray polyurethane foam is different. It expands directly against the corrugated steel walls, conforming to every ridge and valley in the profile. It bonds chemically to the metal surface, eliminating any air gap where moisture could accumulate. The resulting closed-cell layer acts as both a thermal barrier and a vapor retarder — the only FEMA-approved insulation type for flood-prone areas.

We most commonly spray the interior of the container with 2″ of 2 lb closed-cell foam directly against the steel walls, roof, and floor framing. This preserves the container's exterior appearance and maximizes interior usable space.
For containers being used as outdoor storage where interior space preservation is less critical, we can also spray the exterior — then apply an elastomeric roof paint topcoat to protect the foam from UV degradation. Exterior-sprayed containers have the foam fully encapsulated and protected for the long term.

CAN I INSULATE A USED SHIPPING CONTAINER?
Yes — we regularly insulate used containers. The container should be in structurally sound condition with no major rust through on the walls or roof. Minor surface rust is normal and acceptable. We'll inspect the container before quoting.
HOW THICK SHOULD THE SPRAY FOAM BE IN A CONTAINER?
For climate-controlled use with an HVAC unit, we typically recommend 2″ of closed-cell foam (R-13). For containers used only for temperature-sensitive storage or as workshops without full AC, 1″ is sometimes sufficient. We recommend based on your specific use case.
DO I NEED A THERMAL BARRIER COAT OVER THE FOAM?
Interior spray foam in an occupied space requires a thermal barrier per fire code — typically 1/2″ drywall or an intumescent paint coating over the exposed foam. If you're finishing the interior with drywall or paneling, that satisfies the requirement. For unfinished interiors, we can apply intumescent coating.
